Access is no longer labeled as 'separate'; process is differently applied. Both are unequal and often still denied.

When I was in freshman year high school, I avoided anything but my classes or the library. I even avoided pep rallies until, on the way home one afternoon, I realized that with that behavior pattern, at the end of four years, I'd have an excellent education, but I'd have absolutely no high school experience. From then on, I joined everything that struck my fancy. Some didn't fit my talents or personality. But I found that out - education.

Similar things happened as a college student and as an adult employee, and continue to happen as a retiree. I am often a minor participant in a bicultural group of one or more kinds. Because I am sometimes rather 'vocal', most people know when I am pleased and when I am not. But many people who share my ethnicity choose to avoid confrontation, choose to accept separation or ostracism, by majority or controlling populations - it's less painful (figuratively and often, literally).

Now though, there is loss by the minority community. It's obvious.

Even when public provision is made for total involvement, if participants must supply accessory or background resources from their own backgrounds and experience, they have no equality. There is also loss by the majority community. It is impossible to apply knowledge you do not have. It is quite possible (and in some cases, probable) to misapply knowledge that is incomplete or is incorrect. And how can you know green, or red, or white, or brown, or black, or yellow, or other 'colored' person if you have been forced by circumstance or cheated by coercion into separation of environment and of experience? The only reason you know your brothers, sisters, or cousins, is by mutual environment and mutual experience. Otherwise they, like everyone else, would be 'others'.

separate → ignorance (lack of knowledge)

In our society, in this age, the boundaries of all our separations are usually as or more economical as they are cultural.
