Then I started to again agonize over "these people" (did you notice the first change generosity insists upon is that I must be ready to share. Everything). So what could possibly be the reason sane, supposedly rational people, chose as possible leader, boss of the crew, cock of the walk, a person of such vile attitudes and bad habits, whose past can only foreshadow early completion of the destruction his party has so effectively prepared. What indeed.
I think these people who support Trump don't wish to elect Trump. These people probably have the same fears about Trump that his opponents have. These people are also tired. They are tired of being systematically stripped of everything their parents and grandparents worked to provide. They are tired of being robbed of their opportunities to progress as their parents did. They are tired of losing the value of their education, of their money, of their property, of their lives, and of losing their voice. They are tired of being lied to and stolen from by men who are weak, who are venal, who are foolish, and some who are dangerous. These people have chosen Trump because the men for whom they have voted before acted as honorable men, spoke as men of character and wisdom. But too many of them serve others than the people who elected them. They serve the people and the money that paid to insure their election, and these elected men do not have the talent or wisdom or generosity to lead.
These voters are tired. Once or twice, or three, or more times, these people have been lied to or have lost something of value to their heart or to their health because they believed that their elected leaders would help build a healthy and growing society of proud citizens. These people believe that since the 'good' men don't, won't, or can't do the right things, they might as well chose the man who shows by his very life that he is a cheat, a scoundrel, is untrustworthy, disloyal, destructive, hurtful, discourteous, unkind, lawless, angry, extravagant, cowardly, ugly, and irreverent. He will be what we know him to be.
These people are like you and me, but they have surrendered to their hurt and to their pain and to their so profound weariness.
If we truly wish to prevent being Trumped, we must make certain that all of us people get the truth from people who are qualified and willing to work for the public good - all the public. We must assure our friends and fellow citizens that battles are won by warriors who conquer weariness and lost by those who quit. Those who lie down get to lie down twice; once before the battle and again in graves after the battle. Those who insist on standing to win the battle, get to stand again to cheer.
We people can win, but we must join the fight to do so.
